Rosa Parks: From the Back of the Bus to the Front of a Movement
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Author: Camilla Wilson
Average review score:

Rosa Parks: Civil Rights Pioneer
From the Back of the Bus to the Front of a Movement explains why Rosa Parks is considered the mother of the civil rights movement. The book gives an excellent review for a young audience of the history of race relations in the South. It details the events of the day Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Ala., bus to a white man and the cascade of changes that resulted. Parks's many other contributions to the civil rights movement are also brought to light. The portrait of life in rural Pine Level, Ala., where Parks spent her early years will be an eye-opener for young people who are more familiar with urban and suburban settings. This is an informative, revealing account of an important era that makes valuable reading for young and not-so-young audiences alike.

Roselle Park (Images of America)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (April, 2001)
Authors: Pat Pagnetti, Audrey Morgan, and Barbara Sokol
Average review score:

A great trip down memory lane...
This is a very well written history of a very small town in New Jersey. Since I grew up in Roselle Park, it was wonderful to see pictures of the town from long ago. I really enjoyed reading it!

Unfortunately, the above informtion is slightly incorrect. There were actually several authors who created this great book including Audrey Morgan and Barbara Sokol. This book was a huge undertaking (with the help of many people) which resulted in an interesting and thorough record of the town's history.

I highly recommend it to anyone who lives (or ever lived) in Roselle Park. Audrey Morgan, Barbara Sokol and the Pagnettis all did a wonderful job.

Runes of the North
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (September, 1963)
Authors: Sigurd F. Olson and Robert Hines
Average review score:

Enchanting Call of the North
Olson's use of sensory description is a powerful tool in his writing, particularly Ghost Camps of the North (an essay in Ruins of the North). Olson takes the reader on a fantastic adventure in each and every one of his essays. Not only does he take the reader to various geographical locations, but he also takes the reader back to the days of the French/ Canadian Voyageurs, and trappers. Ruins of the North contains work that traces the path the voyagers took from Montreal to Grand Portage, and into the far North The careful description of the Hunting Moon rising has a majical quality about it. Olson is a master nature/ wilderness interpreter that has given the canoeist/ camper a wealth of stories to tell. Reading an essay from Ruins of the North just before one retires at night insures a night filled with vivid dreams, and sound sleep. This can best be illistrated by the Essay The Dream Net.

Sled Dogs Run Away With Child's Heart.........
I had the good fortune of growing up with Lori Yanuchi in a little place called Allentown, PA. What I didnt know back then was her talent for writing and zest for the outdoors! My hat goes off to Lori for capturing the hearts of young children and the young at heart with this great book "Running with the Big Dogs"! My boys were entertained and educated about Alaska and are waiting impatiently for her next book.....no pressure Lori! This book is not a dust collector!

RV Vacations for Dummies
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (15 October, 2002)
Authors: Harry Basch and Shirley Slater
Average review score:

A really, really good book for dummies like me!
I was initially struck by the early sections, which so clearly laid out all the elements of preparing for an RV vacation, including renting or buying, eating and sleeping on the road, and everything from cell phones to the pros and cons of carrying a gun. The remainder of the book has 14 trips around all parts of the US from New England to Florida, Route 66 to California, and the Northwest.

Very handy are details of attractions and campgrounds, which are laid out simply and enjoyable to read. Each trip has a detailed map showing the locations of campgrounds and things to don't want to miss. Anyone who's thinking about RVing will want to get this book.

The Sabertops: Time Does Not Exist

The Sabertops: Time Does Not Exist
The book has an extremely interesting plot with murder and suspence, but it is the timeliness of the topics which deal with genitic manipulation, human cloning, and other social issues that make the reader think about the future and what the future holds for mankind.

What makes this book so interesting is that the author seems to believe and presents in the novel the idea that man is one in spirt and this is how time travel could possibly work. In other words, the author allows the reader to believe that all of mankind past, present, and future beings are all one spiritual entity and that everyone because of the non-existance of time is everyone else.

It is, indeed, a book well worth reading not just for the plot, but for the thought-provoking issues presented about our future.

After reading the book, I realized that it would make an excellent book for students to read not just in literature classes, but also in sociology classes. It would make excellent thought provoking discussions for classroom debate.

The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve: La Jolla Cove, Vol. 1
Published in Paperback by Picaro Pub (2002)
Author: Judith Lea Garfield
Average review score:

A Necessity for Touring La Jolla Cove, La Jolla, CA
La Jolla Cove is one of the best West Coast dive sites. The San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve is the definitive book on La Jolla Cove. The inside front cover has a detailed map of the reserve, which is valuable for dive planning. The text stars with a short history of the ecological reserve and La Jolla Cove. There is a summary of the points of interest of The Cove, and some tips on how to maximize your animal sightings.

This book would be worthwhile for swimmers, skin divers, and scuba divers. Children, especially would enjoy identifying the animals in La Jolla Cove. The Cove has abundant life; it is not necessary to be a diver to appreciate it.

The next 48 pages of the book are pictures of various plants and animals (all aquatic except for several birds and a ground squirrel) that are found in La Jolla Cove. Grasses, kelps, sponges, anemone, abalone, limpets, snails, Octopi, lobsters, crabs, star fish, sharks, rays, eels, seals and lots of fish are included. Each plant or animal has an approximately 3.5 x 5 color photograph, is identified, has an informational blurb, and its appearance, size habitat and food is described.

I have found, while diving La Jolla Cove, that this book not only helped me identify animals, but also to spot animals (especially limpets), because I had seen pictures of what I was looking for. I haven't seen a better guide for La Jolla Cove, or to help identify marine life in Southern California, for that matter. This book has helped me on many of my Southern California dives that were not in La Jolla Cove.

The book has glossy pages that repel water well. It would be a good idea to consider buying two copies, one for underwater use and the other for surface use. I look forward to Judith L. Garfield's book on La Jolla Shores and Canyon.
